FAQs

  • Not yet! The material is still in the development phase. We are working to ensure the material stays true to our values even at scale. Check back again soon as we will launch our mailing list this summer.

  • We believe in using ingredients that are plastic-free and can safely break down in the environment. We use plant proteins, plant fibres, and non-toxic chemicals such that our current materials are technically edible (though we don’t recommend taste testing it yourself).

  • Chemicals themselves are not inherently "bad" or "good." Chemicals are substances with distinct properties, and their effects can vary depending on their composition, concentration, and how they are used. Many chemicals are essential for our daily lives and have numerous beneficial applications. For example, water (H2O) is a chemical compound that is vital for our survival.

  • New Grain™ is naturally a rich black but can also be lightened using our non-toxic process and then dyed into various shades. We are constantly working on ways to keep color addition as sustainable as possible.

  • We believe New Grain™ is very sustainable in theory, but it must also be proven by a third party. Once New Grain™ is further along in its development, we plan to run a complete Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to learn and ensure the material is as sustainable as possible in its creation and its decomposition.

  • We believe it is! Once we have perfected our formula, we will conduct ISO tests to ensure that New Grain™ biodegrades sufficiently before we make it commercially available.

  • It is! At Arda Biomaterials, we believe in keeping all our materials free from animal products. The reason we don’t promote the material as vegan is that the vegan leather market is synonymous with plastic, and New Grain™ isn’t plastic. It’s plants.

  • Leather is primarily a co-product of the meat industry, not a by-product. While the primary purpose of animal farming is to produce meat, the hides and skins of animals are also valuable and subsidise the continuation of animal agriculture. We want to offer terrific alternatives to animal products that aren’t synonymous with plastic while also reducing human dependence on animals.
